Incheon and IFEZA Accelerate Development of Asia’s Largest Aviation MRO Cluster in Yeongjong

Yeongjong International City is moving closer to becoming Asia’s largest aviation maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) hub. The Incheon Metropolitan City Industrial Site Review Committee recently approved Korean Air’s business plan to establish operations within the Yeongjong Aviation General Industrial Complex.

With the approval secured, Korean Air will invest approximately KRW 150 billion to build an advanced engine and parts maintenance facility on a 50,692 ㎡ site in Unbuk-dong. Once the cluster becomes fully operational in 2030, annual engine maintenance capacity is expected to increase from 88 units to 502 units, a 5.7-fold increase, while creating more than 2,000 specialized aviation jobs.

The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZA) has actively supported the project, including expanding eligible industries within the industrial complex. A land purchase agreement is expected to be signed in August, followed by detailed design work. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2029, with operations targeted for 2031.

IFEZA aims to leverage the large-scale MRO ecosystem to establish Yeongjong as a national base for high-value-added aviation industries.

Hana Financial Group Completes Headquarters in Cheongna, Marking the Culmination of a 15-Year Partnership

Hana Financial Group has completed construction of its new Group Headquarters (HQ) in Hana Dream Town, Cheongna International City. The project reached a major milestone with a completion ceremony held on May 21. The relocation marks the first time a major Korean financial holding company has moved its headquarters outside Seoul. Relocation activities are scheduled to begin in September, with approximately 2,200 employees from 10 affiliated companies, including Hana Financial Group and Hana Bank, expected to move by the end of the year. Combined with personnel from the existing Integrated Data Center and Hana Global Campus, the development will create a financial cluster of roughly 4,000 employees in Cheongna. Located near Cheongna International City Station, the headquarters consists of seven basement levels and fifteen above-ground floors. The complex features distinctive architectural elements, including a 1.1-kilometer spiral pedestrian ramp symbolizing cooperation with the local community. Building on this milestone, IFEZA plans to further develop Cheongna as a global digital finance hub specializing in fintech, blockchain, and other advanced technologies. The project is expected to serve as a landmark example of successful public-private cooperation and strengthen Incheon’s financial industry competitiveness.

IFEZA Advances the Development of Songdo International Eco Center

The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority recently convened a task force meeting at G-Tower to strengthen interagency cooperation for the tentatively named Songdo International Eco Center project. The initiative is being developed in conjunction with the Songdo District 11 development project. It aims to establish an international eco-friendly hub that integrates ecological, environmental education, tourism, and research functions. The proposed facility will be located near the northern research district of Block 11-2 and will feature ecological spaces, including artificial wetlands designed to enhance biodiversity and environmental sustainability. The task force currently includes 26 departments from 15 organizations, including the East Asian–Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP), the Korea Polar Research Institute, and the Incheon Metropolitan City Government. Discussions during the meeting focused on best practices from leading wetland centers in cities such as London and Hong Kong, as well as the domestic application of management techniques used in polar wildlife conservation areas. IFEZA plans to further refine the project into a sustainable global model in which urban development and ecological preservation coexist.

Gyeongwonjae by Walkerhill Reaffirms Five-Star Status

Gyeongwonjae by Walkerhill, the traditional Korean-style hotel in Songdo International City, has once again earned a five-star rating, the highest classification awarded through the hotel grading program administered by the Korea Tourism Association. The certification was awarded after the hotel achieved more than 90 percent of the combined score from scheduled and unannounced evaluations. The result reflects the success of premium rebranding efforts and service enhancements implemented following last year’s change in hotel management. Recent upgrades include facility improvements throughout the property, the installation of works created in collaboration with master craftsman Choi Gi-young, who holds National Intangible Cultural Heritage status, and renovations to the lobby and guest rooms. A key highlight was the transformation of the hotel’s restaurant into DINING SONG, a premium dining venue that reflects the elegance of traditional Korean architecture. The restaurant recently received recognition from the Blue Ribbon Survey, further strengthening its culinary reputation. “Gyeongwonjae’s renewed five-star certification demonstrates the exceptional competitiveness of one of Songdo’s signature cultural and tourism assets,” IFEZA said. “We will continue supporting its growth as a globally recognized destination that combines the value of traditional Korean architecture with modern hospitality.”

IFEZA Completes Administrative Procedures for K-Bio Lab Hub, Paving the Way for Construction

The K-Bio Lab Hub project, a key national infrastructure initiative designed to support biotech startups, has completed its administrative procedures and is preparing to begin construction. The facility will be built on the Yonsei University International Campus site in Songdo District 7 with a total project budget of KRW 217.3 billion. The nine-story building, with one basement level, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028. In April, IFEZA requested a construction contract through the Public Procurement Service, where cost reviews are currently underway. Following the review process, the project will proceed through public bidding and contractor selection before construction begins. IFEZA has established a strong partnership with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Yonsei University, and the Incheon Center for Creative Economy & Innovation to ensure stable operations. Biotech startups currently participating in the pilot program are conducting research in temporary facilities at Yonsei University and will be provided with dedicated laboratories and advanced research equipment upon completion of the hub. Once completed, the K-Bio Lab Hub is expected to serve as a key platform for startup incubation, technology commercialization, and global collaboration, further strengthening the Songdo Bio Cluster.

IFEZA Conducts Joint Emergency Drill Ahead of Cheongna Sky Bridge Opening

The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority conducted a joint emergency response drill on May 6 ahead of the official opening of tourism facilities at Cheongna Sky Bridge.

The exercise involved local fire and police departments, the Korea Elevator Safety Agency, and the Incheon Tourism Organization. The observation deck and waterfront facilities officially opened on May 7, while Edge Walk, the bridge’s signature attraction, began full-scale operations on May 15.

The drill focused on emergency response procedures for a high-rise observation facility, emphasizing rapid evacuation and visitor safety. Key training scenarios included emergency reporting and initial response, rescue operations, firefighting procedures, and elevator emergency evacuation.

Through the exercise, participating organizations strengthened coordination and enhanced on-site response capabilities. IFEZA stated that comprehensive safety preparations before and after the opening will help ensure a safe and enjoyable visitor experience.

IFEZA Selected for National Future Mobility Cybersecurity Certification Program

The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority has been selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s “Automotive Cybersecurity Certification and Evaluation Support Program for Global Regulatory Compliance.” The government-funded initiative is designed to help the automotive industry proactively respond to increasingly stringent global cybersecurity regulations, including UN Regulation No. 155 (UN R155). A total of KRW 24 billion will be invested through 2029 to establish testing and evaluation infrastructure within Cheongna Robot Land. Building upon the Connected Car Certification Center developed during Phase 1 and the wireless communication technology system scheduled for completion this year under Phase 2, IFEZA plans to create a comprehensive testing and evaluation ecosystem covering both connectivity and cybersecurity for future mobility technologies.

The project will support cybersecurity management system (CSMS) consulting, specialized workforce training, testing and evaluation services, and cybersecurity threat information-sharing networks.

IFEZA stated that the initiative will help position Incheon as an international hub for automotive cybersecurity while supporting Korean companies in reducing certification costs and strengthening export competitiveness.

IFEZA Introduces New Landscape Guidelines for Apartment Housing

The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZA) has introduced and begun implementing the IFEZ Apartment Housing Landscape Guidelines to improve the uniform appearance of apartment complexes and create a more distinctive urban skyline. Apartment housing represents approximately 60 percent of the built environment within IFEZ and plays a significant role in shaping the cityscape. However, repetitive layouts and densely clustered residential buildings have long been cited as factors that diminish visual openness and create a sense of overcrowding. To address these issues, IFEZA comprehensively revised its previous guidelines and established a three-tier landscape management framework consisting of mandatory guidelines, recommended guidelines, and special design recognition criteria designed to encourage creative architectural design. Key mandatory requirements include limiting the maximum length of residential building blocks to 50 meters to enhance visual openness and ensuring a minimum 25 percent variation in building heights to create a more dynamic skyline. In addition, IFEZA introduced special design recognition criteria that provide greater design flexibility for projects incorporating distinctive balcony features or Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) systems. An IFEZA official said, “We will continue to strengthen landscape management and improve related policies to create a more attractive urban environment that residents can genuinely experience and enjoy.”
