Songdo Waterfront Project Gains Momentum, Opening New Waterways and Expanding Public Waterfront Spaces by 2027
The City of Incheon is accelerating the Songdo Waterfront Phase 1-2 Project, a flagship initiative that will connect waterways, strengthen flood resilience, and create more waterfront spaces for residents and visitors.
At the heart of the project is the construction of a 1.03-kilometer waterway linking the lake in Songdo District 6 with Aam Lake. Once completed, the new channel will improve water circulation while expanding public access to the waterfront.
Since construction began in February 2024, the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) Authority has completed key preparatory work, including administrative approvals, utility relocation, and temporary road construction. Dredging of the District 6 lake has also been completed, creating conditions suitable for leisure boats while increasing the area's floodwater storage capacity.
This year, work will focus on building the northern connecting waterway and a new waterfront promenade near the Arts Center Incheon. The area will feature walking trails, fountains, sandy beaches, observation decks, and photo spots, providing residents with attractive recreational spaces along the water.
Scheduled for completion in early 2027, the project is expected to transform Songdo into a vibrant waterfront destination while enhancing urban safety.
With an additional 6.9 million cubic meters of floodwater storage capacity, the waterfront will not only support leisure and tourism but also strengthen the city's resilience against extreme rainfall caused by climate change.
