On September 8, 2011, the Korea Polar Research Institute held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new headquarters in Songdo International City. The headquarters is a national project being developed on a site area of 35,887 square meters, with a total floor area of 21,525 square meters, backed by a total project cost of KRW 88.2 billion (approximately USD 81 million). The complex will be built in phases to include a main building, research building, polar support building, dormitory, special research facilities, and a polar exhibition hall. Leveraging its strategic location near an international airport and port facilities, the headquarters is expected to serve as a key base supporting Arctic and Antarctic research as well as the operation of icebreaking research vessels.
