On Wednesday, April 27, 2011, Samsung Biologics held the groundbreaking ceremony for its Samsung Biologics plant in Songdo International City. Samsung Biologics is a joint venture between Samsung Electronics, Samsung Everland, Samsung C&T, and Quintiles in the United States, and plans to invest a total of KRW 2.1 trillion in 274,000㎡ in Songdo International City's 5th district to build the plant in stages. The first stage is to invest 330 billion won by the end of 2012 to have an ultra-modern biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility equipped with a 30,000-liter animal cell incubator, and to produce biopharmaceuticals in earnest from the first half of 2013. It plans to produce therapeutic biopharmaceuticals that comply with cGMP, a pharmaceutical production standard recognized by the US FDA and European EMA, and export most of them abroad.
