On Thursday, October 6, 2016, Merck held an opening ceremony for the “Merck Research Center in Songdo International City.” Merck is a German company specializing in life science and functional materials, and it invested approximately KRW 10 billion (approximately USD 9 million) in Songdo International City through the establishment of this research center. The center was set to provide solutions related to process development and quality control for companies developing new drugs for rare diseases and cancer treatment, while also supporting professional education and workforce training. The opening was expected to contribute to strengthening the bio-medical industry ecosystem in Songdo International City and expanding global research and development cooperation.
