On Friday, February 18, 2005, the Incheon Metropolitan City Subway Construction Headquarters held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Incheon Subway Line 1 extension project to Songdo International City. At the time, the project was planned to extend the line from Dongmak Station to Songdo International City, covering 6.544 kilometers and adding six stations. According to the completed project information released later by the Incheon Metropolitan City Subway Construction Headquarters, the first-phase section opened in June 2009, and the project was expected to improve transportation access to Songdo International City and support the foundation for investment attraction.
