On Wednesday, May 18, 2005, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), at its 61st annual session held in Bangkok, Thailand, unanimously decided with the support of 62 member and associate member countries to establish the United Nations Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (APCICT) in Songdo International City. According to Hankook Ilbo and Simin Ilbo, the center was to be located in Songdo Technopark and provide professional information and communication technology training, support efforts to reduce the digital divide, and offer country-specific ICT consulting. The decision was expected to strengthen the Republic of Korea’s standing in the international community and help Songdo International City grow into a leading information technology hub.
